I am a studio artist: painter and I have been working for the last three years in Houston, Texas. In November of 1999 I was laid off, and I decided to pick myself up, dust myself off, and try my hand at going back to school to study art; to fully develop my skills in what I now know will be a lifelong educational journey. That, my friends, was the decision of my life. The best solution for me was to return to college and pursue the degree that I wanted, and after much soul searching and waffling back and forth I chose Painting as my field of study simply because it smelled the best in the Painting studio. I am not kidding. It has been a wild ride. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art: Painting from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2004. I earned a Master of Fine Arts in Drawing and Painting from the University of North Texas in Denton, TX, in 2007. During my journey I have been an Area Assistant and a Graduate Teaching Assistant, and I have taught myself how to build excellent stretcher bars. I accepted a residency at a college in Houston, TX for the 2007/2008 academic year and I am currently an adjunct Professor of Art at several Houston area colleges.I am influenced by great music, I title my work from song lyrics, and I don't worry about my motivations, preferring to work intuitively, only later realizing what motivated a work. I never explain, simply because that would take away your ability to look at the work and make up your own mind. Without that interaction there is nothing. I enter another world while I am working, and I am trying to bring a little more back with me in each painting. I sing in the shower and the studio, and carry a digital camera with me everywhere, it has become my sketchbook. |
